FAQ: Fluora - The Magical LED Houseplant
For the most up-to-date information about the status of our project, check our project updates on Kickstarter!

What does Fluora look like during the daytime?

During the day, and with the lights off, Fluora will look like a typical artificial houseplant. There’s a picture of it in the campaign “design” section! Its stems and leaves were designed to look aesthetically pleasing with the LEDs off, and the shape of the plant is very natural and approachable.

If you choose to keep Fluora on during the day, the perceived brightness of the plant will decrease, as there is more ambient light in the room. In general, keeping the plant out of direct sunlight will ensure the light doesn’t get washed out.

Will Fluora work with my existing smart lights or smart home ecosystems?

Yes! The plan is to integrate the software running on fluora with the large home automation ecosystems (Google Assistant, Alexa, HomeAssist, etc.) and have it work with all of the big smart lights (LiFX, Philips Hue, C by GE, etc).

We will try and ship the first batch of products out with these feature, but will give ourselves the ability to remotely update the software on Fluora plants if these integrations are not done by the time we ship the first batch.

Can I use Fluora outdoors? Is it waterproof?

Fluora is intended for indoor use. While it is fine to place the plant outside temporarily (e.g. for events) under appropriate conditions, it is not weather-resistant and should not be exposed to rain, snow, high winds, high temperatures, or high UV exposure.

What is Fluora made out of? Are the materials sustainable, and safe?

  • The product has 3 main components—LED leaves, Plant Stems, and a Ceramic Pot. The LED Leaves are made from polycarbonates that are fully recyclable at the end of their life. LEDs are, of course, one of the most sustainable light sources on the market. They last longer 5x and consume 75% less energy than other lights (incandescent bulbs, fluorescent tubes, etc.)

LEDs do not contain significant amounts of any harmful components, they are classed as RoHS compliant. They don’t contain any mercury, and don’t emit any polluting, UV, infrared, or other radiation and pose no health hazards.

Will COVID-19 affect your delivery timeline?

We’ve been doing a ton of diligence with our manufacturing partners to ensure that we will be able to manufacture, ship, and deliver Fluora to presale customers on time.

In fact, our plan is to visit before the manufacturing run starts. Of course, relations with China amid the pandemic have been volatile, which may lead to complications that could feasibly turn into delays.

How do I set up Fluora?

Setting up Fluora will be as easy as setting up a simple IKEA coffee table! It’s going to ship in 2 boxes—one with the pot and leaves, and another with the stems. You’ll unbox everything, putting the stems into the pot, and the leaves onto the stems, then plugging the power supply into a wall outlet. After that, you’ll download our mobile app and get the plant on your home Wi-Fi network. And that’s it!

What do I do if LEDs or other hardware break?

  • We will offer replacement hardware for the plant that can be ordered online and shipped directly to your home. Each leaf on Fluora is replaceable, so if an LED in a leaf burns out, or an entire leaf breaks, you can simply order a new one and swap it out! In the extremely rare event that a stem, the pot, or components in the pot break, you’ll be able to order replacements for these parts as well!

Why is Fluora so Expensive?

Our main goal with Fluora is to create a compelling and magical product that has the ability to change the feel of an indoor space.

We looked at trying to make it as cheap as possible, or shrinking the product down, but ultimately did not want to compromise on quality, size, and light produced on our very first product. It was really important for the plant have a very premium feel, look realistic, and enough light throw from the LEDs to change the feel of a medium to large sized room.

In addition, we wanted to put a computer inside the product that was powerful enough to drive a 3D LED engine, do live audio processing for music reactivity, and take in other interesting inputs that would lead to dynamic integrations with other apps and products. So basically: premium materials, overall size, processing power, and number of LEDs all contribute to Fluora’s higher price tag.

Why are you only shipping to USA?

The decision to keep Fluora only to the USA was to simplify and streamline fulfillment. With consumer electronics products, there is the added overhead of regulatory compliance for products.

We do have plans to ship to complete compliance internationally, and ship to Europe and Asia in 2021, likely through direct sales on our website! If you are interested but live internationally, you can sign up for the Fluora mailing list (at the bottom of our website: https://www.ledhouseplant.com/), or subscribe to our kickstarter campaign to receive updates.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
